Somass Estuary Restoration Action Plan

In 2023, a two-day multi-party and community member engagement event about habitat restoration in the Somass River Estuary was held, with the purpose of identifying issues, values, and developing priorities for restoration. The symposium had approximately 40 attendees and shared important ecological knowledge, highlighted the significance of the Somass Estuary, and reviewed history and human use in the area. There was then facilitated discussion towards an action plan which included mapping values, breakout groups to define desired future states, and a poster activity to narrow down how we get there.

Following the symposium, the Somass Estuary Action Plan Working Group worked to co-develop the 2025 Somass Estuary Restoration Action Plan. The following parties contributed to the final plan:

BC Coastal Marine Strategy

The BC Coastal Marine Strategy was co-developed by the Province and First Nations and included a multi-year engagement process to inform the strategy. From 2021-2024 an Intentions Paper was followed by engagement and technical sessions, leading to the co-writing of the strategy. The BC Coastal Marine Strategy was completed in 2024.
