The 1st Barkley Sound Knowledge Symposium

February 9-11, 2010

[Please see post-symposium page]

The first Barkley Sound Knowledge Symposium is a unique 3-day gathering for the integration, summary, and synthesis of scientific, indigenous, and other local knowledge of the Barkley Sound ecosystem in British Columbia, Canada. Knowledge gathered will support sustainability planning initiatives in Barkley Sound and the West Coast of Vancouver Island.  The public is welcome as space permits.

The symposium will begin on February 9, 2010 with special pre-opening presentations on the M.V. Francis Barkley on her journey from Port Alberni to the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre where the main part of the symposium will be held.  More special presentations will conclude the journey during the return trip to Port Alberni on February 11.

At the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre, speakers and other registrants will participate in mini-presentations, panel discussions, and focus groups.  Lodging, meals, and refreshments will be provided as part of the full registration package.

Contributed knowledge will be documented in Barkleypedia and in an edited proceedings to be published as part of an Integrated Ecosystem Assessment (IEA). This IEA, which will include socio-economic and cultural assessment, will form the basis of Comprehensive Ocean Zoning plan for Barkley Sound and an Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management Plan for the broader West Coast of Vancouver Island area. The ultimate vision is integrated, collaborative, and truly participatory coastal and ocean planning and management that will ensure the restoration and sustainability of the region’s unique ecological, social, cultural, and economic values.

We wish you an exciting trip to Bamfield for the first Barkley Sound Knowledge Symposium!
