article:  Streamkeepers training at Big Bend Creek

Nov. 2, 2005

The Gold River Streamkeepers put on a course on October 28 for 6 new members, four of which were high school students from Gold River Secondary. Dave CLough (RPBio) instructed the course through a combination of class time and in-field training at Big Bend Creek.

While at Big Bend Creek a black bear and bald eagle were noticed in the newly planted riparian area (planted by GR Secondary School students and Streamkeepers) under the Hydro lines. This led to speculation that salmon were possibly spawning in the upper sections of the creek and was later confirmed by the presence of a very large red. This created some excitement among members, as salmon escapements into the upper section hadn't occurred consistently in quite some time. Last years restoration project below the highway culvert was intended to improve this.

Funding for the Big Bend Creel projects was made available through application to the Pacific Salmon Foundation, Forest Investment Account, Ministry of Transportation, and the Nootka Sound Economic Development Corporation. We have received generous donations in kind from Conuma Excavating, Gold River Futures Society and especially Western Forest Products who continue to provide equipment, tools and expert advice. We would also like to thank the Mowachaht/Muchalaht for all their support and the many others whom we may have forgotten to mention here.

These are just some of the many wonderful things that the Gold River Streamkeepers are able to accomplish because of the training the Streamkeepers course provides. We try to provide a free course once a year and encourage new members to sign up or visit our website at www.grstreamkeepers.com for contact information.
