article:  Low returns spurs on conservation measures

Ha-Shilth-Sa
Apr. 26, 2007

The Hupacasath First Nation is concerned about the low numbers forecast for the 2007 Somass sockeye return and have called on all Nuu-chah-nulth nations, Ha'wiih and chiefs and councils to make all efforts to protect the stocks.

A letter has been sent out from the First Nation with information that says only 210,000 Somass sockeye are forecast to return, leaving only 10,000 pieces above the mandatory escapement levels to maintain sufficient spawning populations.

"Given the projected very low return, the Hupacasath First Nations wanted to immediately inform all nations that the opportunity to access Somass sockeye for food this year will be limited to the Somass tribes," read the letter.

The nation asks that preparations be made for other communities to access their required sockeye from other coastal sources this year.
