Shorebird Festival events are free of charge, but donations are encouraged and gratefully accepted at each event. Consider becoming a Shorebird Supporter - a minimum $25 donation for the whole festival (charitable receipt available).

For more information about the festival call the Raincoast Interpretive Centre (RIC) at 725-2560 or email res@island.net (or drop by at the corner of 4th and Main St., Tofino, upstairs, yellow building.

Friday, April 27
"Shorebird Mating Systems: Monogamy, Polygamy, and Cross-Dressing Males" - 7:30pm, at the RIC.
Join Dr. Dov Lank, shorebird ecologist and adjunct professor at Simon Fraser University, for a stimulating session on shorebird mating. Don't worry - it's rated G (for "G"reat talk)

Saturday, April 28
"A Morning of Birding":
Join Adrian Dorst, Dov Lank, and other local birders and naturalists at two shorebird viewing locations:
Chesterman's Beach, 8 - 9am: park at the South Chesterman Beach parking lot and look for the spotting scopes and birders on the beach. After that, we'll migrate over to the end of Sharp Road. Meet at the end of Sharp Road by the Tofino Hatchery at 9am-ish. (Turn down Sharp Road at the Dolphin Motel.) Parking is limited: carpool, bike or walk.

"Shorebirds 101" - 2pm at the Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre in the park. Join local expert birder and photographer Adrian Dorst for a spectacular slide show. It will inspire you to learn how to identify shorebirds in the area.

"Guided Shorebird Walk" at Wickaninnish Beach - 4pm.
Join park interpreter Silva Johansson for a guided shorebird walk. Meet on the front observation deck of the Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

"Living on the Edge" - 7:30pm at the Clayoquot Field Station (Tofino Botanical Gardens)
Join Bruce Whittington, co-founder and past Executive Director of the Habitat Acquisition Trust for an informative talk on challenges that brids face on the West Coast, how we can respond and what we can do to help.

Sunday, April 29
Start the day with some self-guided birding! We recommend Chesterman Beach while the tide is low, and the Mudflats at the end of Sharp Road, Grice Bay or the Tofino Botanical Gardens two hours before the tide rises to a high at 12pm.

Mudflats Stewardship Celebration at the Tofino Botanical Gardens: 1 -3pm
Join us at the gardens for a celebration about shorebirds and mudflats. Bring your sketchbooks and bring some poems about mud, birds, or anything that tickles your fancy. We'll have a talking circle about the mudflats with birders, naturalists, local writers and more. Look out for more information!

Guided Shorebird Walk with park interpreter Silva Johanssen.
Meet at 4pm on the front observation deck of the Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.
