If you're planning a fishing trip this season, expect to be greeted by a representative of JO Thomas and Associates. The Sports Fishing Advisory Board has recently launched a three year pilot project to update the accuracy of some of the data that is being used by the DFO concerning issues such as the average length to weight ratio of sport caught Halibut in British Columbis waters. Up to now, this information has been templated for BC caught fish from Southern Alsaska and Neah Bay (Washington).

Surveyors are asking questions like approximate times first hook was dropped and last one brought up, how many rods were out, areas fished and of course taking the measurements and weight of any Halibut and/or Salmon brought in. Zeballos surveyor Joy Myers says one of the key things they'd like people to remember is that this is strictly research and voluntary at the time being. No names or licenses will be taken and the cooperation of the public is very important so the information recorded is accurate.

The Sports Fishing Advisory Board believes that this study is in the best interest of the sports fishing community, and will be publishing a full report of their findings in the fall.

For more information on the Coastwide Halibut Survey you can contact WJ (Bill) Otway, co-chair SFAB Halibut Data Sub-Committee at waycot@shaw.ca.
