| article: | Local fish farms did not get tainted feed | |||||||||
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency reported last week it is working with fish feed supplier Skretting Canada, a subsidiary of the Norwegian company Nutreco, to recall fish food tainted by the chemical, which originated in contaminated Chinese wheat gluten. Of the 57 fish farms and hatcheries affected, Spencer Evans says Creative Salmon is not one of them. In fact, Evans reports the feed went mainly to hatcheries and not to fish farms. Representatives from both the CFIA and Skretting Canada refused to name the operations affected on this side of the border while they conduct an investigation. "Based on the information available, Health Canada has concluded that the consumption of fish fed this feed does not pose a human health risk," reads a press release from CFIA. Melamine is a chemical compound commonly combined with formaldehyde for use in countertops, glues, flame retardants, and fabrics. It is not approved for use as an ingredient in human food or livestock feed in Canada or the US. The same contaminated
wheat gluten product was used in some pet food, and is linked to several
cat and dog deaths. home
