The board has been active in the following aquatic management issues:

Access and Benefits
- Access and Benefits working group
- Gathered baseline information on access and benefits in area
- Working on report regarding Access and Benefits
- Resolution regarding Aquatic Conservation Trust, and background information assembled.
- Drafted Aquatic Opportunities Study (pending further resources to complete)
- Development of non-profit consulting service utilizing people with local knowledge and providing mentoring opportunities.
- Establishment of WCVI Brand and identity (in development)
- Establishment of WCVI internet sales to sell aquatic products from WCVI (in development).

Aquaculture
- Aquaculture Working Group
- Work with Pacific Region Fisheries Conservation Council regarding salmon aquaculture forum.
- Initial discussions with Province about improving siting
- Request to facilitate Kyuquot/Checleseth discussion regarding converting Chinook farms to Atlantic farms in their territory.

Abalone
- Recommendations to DFO regarding renewal of permits for Abalone Hatchery Facility
- Receipt of funding for Abalone Monitoring and Enforcement

The Future of Fisheries
- AMB Fisheries Working Group
- Review of Pearse/McRae and First Nations Panel on Fisheries
- Recommendations to government on fisheries policy and direction


Tuna Fishery
- Review of changes to fishery, and concerns and options sent to DFO.

Hake Fishery
- Review of hake fishery issues and outline of concerns to DFO.

Groundfish Fisheries
- Request for participation in Commercial Groundfish Industry Advisory Committee.

Rockfish
- Discussions with DFO on involvement of Board in rockfish conservation areas in the WCVI area, and in policy issues regarding rockfish.

Prawn Fishery
- Request for information from DFO on management approach used in prawn fishery and regulations for recreational and commercial users to protect spawning females.

Salmon Troll Fishery
- List of concerns sent to DFO, with recommendation and request for information, regarding allocation issues.
- Chair of multi-party forum on future of WCVI troll fishery

Sardine Fishery
- Review of developing commercial sardine fishery and comments to DFO

Clam Fishery and Clam Aquaculture Reconciliation
- Policy recommendations to DFO regarding clam licence transferability
- Request from Clam Board to assist in developing alternative proposals for reconciling clam aquaculture and wild clam fishery
- Providing information and facilitating development of alternative proposal regarding future of clam fishery.

Clayoquot Coastal Zone Planning
- Work in formation of Steering Committee to oversee development of Clayoquot Coastal Plan.
- Outline of coastal planning process, including information requirements.
- Development of Regional Information System, including interactive map and document database
- Awaiting word from Central Region Board that they wish to proceed

Tseshaht Coastal Planning
- Meetings with staff and council to outline options for coastal planning processes, and help in initiating their planning process.

Kyuquot Coastal Planning
- Observing and reviewing Provincial Coastal Use Plan, including providing recommendations on the Plan and follow up.
- Participation in follow up activities.

Marine Values Mapping Project
- Development of proposal to map social, economic, and ecological values of WCVI marine area


Marine Ecosystem Management and Decision Support Tools

- Survey and report on what ecosystem management means at a practical level, and what can be done to implement it.

Transboundary Cooperation
- Participation on ‘Big Eddy’ Steering Committee, with a goal to work in an integrated manner with US agencies, First Nations, and groups on transboundary ocean issues

Oil Spill Response
- Participation in mock oil spill response exercise for WCVI
- Distribution of training opportunities for oil spill response training
- Development of community oil spill response training as part of sea otter proposal
- Discussions with Environment Canada regarding proactive oil spill planning in WCVI area

Ballast Water
- Drafted assessment paper. Noted that this is a transboundary issue requiring international cooperation.

Habitat Stewardship and Plans
- Development of WCVI ‘habitat plan’, and ‘Stewardship Centre’ approach to replace HCSP program. - Supervision of 3 habitat stewardship positions for one year until end of HCSP.

Priority Salmon Projects
- Identification of priority salmon projects in the area, and development of proposals for funding.

Hosting World Salmon Summit satellite session
- Hosted World Salmon Summit satellite session in Bamfield

Kauwanch River Restoration
- Successful application for funding to perform watershed restoration activities

Eagle Rock Quarry
- Presentation from project proponents.
- Review of proposed project and recommendations sent to Provincial Environmental Assessment office.

Marine Plant Monitoring
- Successful proposal for kelp mapping in Clayoquot Sound. Waiting for assessment season.
- Coordination with Strawberry Isle Research Society on mapping eelgrass and making information available via the AMB’s regional information system.

Pesticide Use
- Assessment of pesticide use impacts, and regulations. Awaiting information on specific quantities and locations, to be part of a proposal on ‘cumulative pollution impacts’.

Hatcheries
- Request to DFO that smaller hatcheries be included in review of hatcheries and that AMB be kept informed as review progresses.
- Recommendation to DFO for Board to assess the socioeconomic and ecological issues associated with Hatcheries, and to explore options available to address impacts of reducing hatchery operations.

Independent Power Projects
- Presentation from independent consultant on current state and environmental impacts of independent power projects, including any recommendations about them.

Biodiesel
- Drafted proposal to look at feasibility of converting fish waste into fuel. Hosted meeting in Tofino with possible suppliers. Seeking funding for Business Plan.

Education, Culture, and Language
- Successful proposal to develop CD-rom and poster of Nuu-chah-nulth and English words and information about 25+ sea creatures.
- Inclusion of diverse information and views on aquatic creatures and management on the AMB website
- Proposal (recently submitted) for on-line multi-media Aquarium.
- Meetings with groups from Australia, Indonesia, Brazil, and eastern Canada and US regarding the area and Board.

Aquatic Research Projects
- Proposal to develop interactive on-line ‘research stories’ map that displays all aquatic research in the area using multi-media. (Applied for funding).

Species at Risk Act
- Presentation by DFO to Board on SARA before it was implemented. Request for more information socioeconomic studies being undertaken.
- Proposal to identify salmon species requiring proactive measures to keep them from being listed, and to identify threats to them (applied for funding).

Contamination and management of seals and sea lions
- Request from WCVI Wildlife Advisory Committee for information on contamination and management of seals and sea lions.
- Research and compiled information and presented it to WCVI WAC.
