PACHEEDAHT FISHERIES OVERVIEW

The Vancouver Island Summary Land Use Plan identified the following fishery use and potential in the Pacheedaht region:
• important crab grounds between Jordan River and Sheringham Point, and in Port San Juan
• important commercial groundfish areas fronting Port San Juan and Carmanah Point
• important salmon holding grounds throughout this area
• significant population of northern abalone in addition to important octopus population

 
 

Prawn
Found in subtidal water to depths of 70 - 90m. Average size 15cm.
Prawns generally live four years, starting their lives as males and transforming into females the final year of life, a condition known as protandric hermaphrodism. Commercial fishery by traps set on long lines at various depths. Sports fishery uses traps.
