Oceans Day celebration in Ditidaht

DITIDAHT FISHERIES OVERVIEW


The Vancouver Island Summary Land Use Plan identified the following fishery use and potential in the Ditidaht region:
• important crab grounds offshore adjacent to Nitinat Lake
• important commercial groundfish areas fronting Carmanah Point
• important salmon holding grounds throughout this area
• significant population of northern abalone in addition to important octopus population

Pacific Cod
The Pacific Cod feeder on invertebrates and small fish. Widely distributed in the coastal North Pacific, stocks are currenetly at historically low levels. Although it is dificult to age Pacific Cod, their growth rates are believed to be relatively fast, reaching about 30cm in the first year and sexual maturity by year 2 or 3.
